Product Description: The anhydrous form is a colorless gas. It is unstable and easily decomposes into silicon tetrafluoride and hydrogen fluoride. The aqueous solution is colorless and exhibits strong acidic properties. It is corrosive and can etch glass. It should be stored in wax or plastic containers. Concentrated solutions crystallize into colorless dihydrate crystals when cooled, with a melting point of 19°C. Fluorosilicic acid has disinfectant properties. It is used to produce fluorosilicates and cryolite, as well as in electroplating, beer disinfection, and wood preservation. It is prepared by dissolving silicon dioxide in hydrofluoric acid or by heating a mixture of quartz powder, calcium fluoride, and concentrated sulfuric acid. It can also be obtained by absorbing silicon tetrafluoride gas, released during the decomposition of phosphate ore in phosphate fertilizer plants, with water.
